Birth and importance

Did you know that the history of our hotel is partly linked to that of the University of Bologna? Alma Mater Studiorum, the University of Bologna, is the oldest in the West and began as far back as 1088. At that time Bologna was an important cultural and commercial center, and its inhabitants felt the necessity to better organize the structure of studies, mainly in the field of law. The official date of the foundation of the University of Bologna is December 18, 1088, when the faculty and students established a set of rules and arrangements for organizing studies, either in their own homes or in rooms rented from the municipality. During the 900th anniversary, in 1988, various activities were organized to commemorate this milestone in the history of higher education. Lectures, exhibitions, plays and concerts were held, involving students, faculty, alumni and the general public. The event was a way to celebrate the University of Bologna's lasting legacy and impact over the centuries. The term "Alma Mater Studiorum" comes from Latin and can be translated as "nurturer of studies”: the use of this locution emphasizes the central role that the institution plays in the transmission of knowledge and the education of students, as a mother figure who nurtures, supports and guides students in their academic and educational journey. And in particular, it refers to the fact that it is the first university in the Western world to establish the model of higher education institution that is still followed today.

School of Glossator

The Bolognese School of Glossatori, in particular, was the School of jurists and scholars who reconstructed the Emperor Justinian I’s Corpus Iuris CIvilis; in fact, the term ‘Glossatore’ comes from ‘glossa’, a note or commentary written in the margin of a legal or canonical text. You should know that our building housed two of the most famous of them: Alberic di Porta Ravennate, who made it the center of the Society of Arts, and Odofredo, who used it as his personal residence; both held their lectures at their own residences receiving remuneration directly from their students. This was a common method in medieval times, in which teaching often took place informally, within the professors’ homes. Everything took place in the place where our Room 230 is now located, which, for this reason, we have named “Suite of the Glossators” in their honor. The Bolognese School of the Glossators represents an important moment in the history of the study and teaching of Roman law, contributing to the formation of the European legal system. Their interpretation and analysis of the Corpus Iuris Civilis have influenced European law to the present day.

A center of higher academic learning

In the centuries that followed, the University of Bologna grew in popularity and fame, attracting students from all over Europe. It was a place for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, becoming a center of excellence in the fields of science and the humanities. During the Renaissance, the University of Bologna was a teaching center for renowned scholars and artists such as Giorgio Vasari, author of "Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects," and Ulisse Aldrovandi, an internationally renowned naturalist and botanist. Over the centuries, the Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna has seen the introduction of new courses of study and the expansion of its campuses. Today, the university offers a wide variety of disciplines including law, economics, engineering, medicine, political science, literature and philosophy. The university has also taken a leading role in organizing international conferences and symposia, contributing to the enrichment of academic and scientific debate.

The Alma Mater Studiorum today

The Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna boasts numerous departments and research facilities, and is still considered one of the best universities in Europe. Its long history and commitment to academic excellence have made it a benchmark for students and scholars from around the world.

Here are some places of interest at the University that you can experience within walking distance of our hotel in the centre of Bologna . You can visit the Archiginnasio, one of the most significant places in the city of Bologna, as this historic building was the heart of the university during much of its history. Built in the 16th century, today it houses the Archiginnasio Municipal Library, which holds a vast collection of ancient books and manuscripts.

Another attraction we recommend is the Anatomical Theater, located inside the Archiginnasio, the Anatomical Theater is a hall dating back to the 17th century in which anatomical demonstrations were performed for medical students.

You can also visit the Bologna University Library, as it is one of the most important libraries in the entire university, with a vast collection of books, manuscripts and historical documents.

Finally, we recommend the weekend in Verdi Square, here the fun is guaranteed. This square is located in the university district and is often bustling with students. It is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the academic atmosphere of Bologna.

All of these places are easily accessible within a few minutes' walk mor if you prefer by the buses of Bologna .
